Coach John Baker
Coach John brings an impressive background in professional athletics and player development to Lamorinda Jiu Jitsu. Drafted by the Oakland Athletics after playing at UC Berkeley, John spent seven seasons as a Major League Baseball catcher with the Marlins, San Diego Padres, and Chicago Cubs. Following his playing career, he worked in mental performance coaching with the Cubs, including their 2016 World Series championship season, and later served as Director of Coaching & Player Development for the Pittsburgh Pirates.
John leads our 6 AM Jiu Jitsu class and kids' classes, emphasizing the Constraints-Led Approach (CLA) and ecological training. Through purposeful games, live problem-solving, and guided exploration, he helps students develop technique, adaptability, creativity, and confidence.
His experience in elite athletics and innovative coaching makes him a wonderful addition to our Lamorinda Jiu Jitsu family!
